Effectiveness of 2D radiographs in detecting CBCT-based incidental findings in orthodontic patients

Abstract Some craniofacial diseases or anatomical variations are found in radiographic images taken for other purposes. These incidental findings (IFs) can be detected orthodontic patients, as various radiographs required diagnosis. The data of 1020-orthodontic patients were interpreted to evaluate the rates IFs three-dimensional (3D) cone-beam-computed tomography (CBCT) with a large field view (FOV) and investigate effectiveness accuracy two-dimensional (2D) detecting compared CBCT. Prevalence five areas was measured sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) negative (NPV). accuracies 2D-radiograph through proportion test. A total 709-cases (69.5%) 1020-subjects showed one more CBCT images. Nasal cavity most affected area. Based on gold standard, different 2D-radiographs observed each area findings. highest confirmed soft tissue calcifications comprehensive radiographs. For nasal septum deviations, postero-anterior cephalograms accurate 2D radiograph. In cases not determined because its ambiguity radiographs, considering them an absence increased accuracy.
